In football (soccer) scores, what do the numbers reported in parenthesis after the actual score mean?

Question by Confused: In football (soccer) scores, what do the numbers reported in parenthesis after the actual score mean?
For example, after last night’s England v. Ukraine game, the newspapers all report the score as 2:1 (1:0). England certainly won 2 to 1, so what’s the 1:0 about?

one was a goal the other a penalty, or 1 nil at 1/2 time
